The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Monday authorised Congress president Sonia Gandhi to decide the party’s nominee for the upcoming Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections. The CWC, the party’s highest decision-making body, unanimously passed a resolution in this regard. The resolution was moved by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
Though the Congress leadership is engaged in consultations with its allies, it is yet to come out with any names. Sonia is likely to announce the candidates this week. After the meeting, Mukherjee said that Sonia would take the final call based on consensus. The Finance Minister said that the Congress was the single largest party in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and Sonia Gandhi would consider all aspects before taking a decision.
Mukherjee, whose name is also being mentioned for the post of the President, described himself as a small player in the entire episode. “As far as my knowledge, I have been somehow rather involved since 1974... after the retirement of V V Giri. Most of the times in the presidential elections, except for a small break in the NDA regime, I was a minor player, small actor in this process. We always left it to the Congress president,” Mukherjee said.Major political formations like the Congress-led UPA and NDA are yet to announce their strategy for the next month’s Presidential election, while the AIADMK and the BJD have declared former Speaker P A Sangma as their candidate.
