VISAKHAPATNAM: A 45-year-old woman was stripped and beaten to death while hundreds of villagers watched at Kintaluru tribal hamlet in Madugula mandal in Visakhapatnam district on Sunday by branding her a sorcerer.

The incident came to light on Monday after the police rushed to the spot.

Some villagers dragged Mamidi Atchayamma out of her home on Sunday afternoon and tied her to a tree. Later, they undressed her before thrashing her severely. Despite her pleas to save her life and honour, the angry mob kept on beating her black and blue. She fainted and assuming that she had died, the accused went off.

Soon, word reached the cops who rushed to the village and shifted her to the government hospital where she succumbed.

Sources said following the death of two youngsters at nearby Kintaluru hamlet, the tribals suspected that they had died because of Atchayamma's witchcraft. They hatched a plan to eliminate her. Meanwhile, police registered cases against 12 villagers for killing the woman.

Top al-Qaida strategist Abu Yahya al-Libi likely killed in Pakistan

Top al-Qaida strategist Abu Yahya al-Libi likely killed in Pakistan
Abu Yahya al-Libi, one of al-Qaida's top strategists and seen as the most prominent figure in the network after leader Ayman al Zawahri, may have been killed in a drone strike in northwest Pakistan.
PESHAWAR/DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Abu Yahya al-Libi, one of al-Qaida's top strategists and seen as the most prominent figure in the network after leader Ayman al Zawahri, may have been killed in a drone strike in northwest Pakistan, Pakistani intelligence officials said on Tuesday.

If his death is confirmed it would be the biggest blow to al-Qaida since US special forces killedOsama bin Laden in a secret raid in Pakistan in May 2011.

US sources said Libi, a Libyan cleric with a degree in chemistry who has survived previous drone attacks, was a target of a strike early on Monday in the North Waziristan tribal region, home to some of the world's most notorious militant groups.

Some US officials describe Libi, whose real name is Mohamed Hassan Qaid, as number two to alZawahri, the former Egyptian doctor who took over al-Qaida after bin Laden's death.

Pakistani intelligence officials told Reuters they believe Libi (which means Libyan in Arabic) may have been among seven foreign militants killed in Monday's strike.

One of the officials said Pakistani authorities had intercepted telephone chatter about Libi, an al-Qaida theologian and expert on new media whose escape from a US-run prison in Afghanistanin 2005 made him famous in al-Qaida circles.

"We intercepted some conversations between militants. They were talking about the death of a 'sheikh'," one of the Pakistani intelligence officials said, referring to the title given to senior religious leaders.

"They did not name this person but we have checked with our sources in the area and believe they are referring to al-Libi."

A militant commander in North Waziristan closely associated with foreign fighters however said: "He has not been killed. This is not the first time claims have been made about his death. The Americans are suffering heavy losses in Afghanistan so they have resorted to making false claims."

It can take months to confirm whether drone strikes have killed an Islamist militant leader because the area of the attack is often sealed off by the Taliban in the lawless northwest of Pakistan. Burials are quick in order to hide casualties and identities.

If a drone strike did kill Libi, it would bolster the American argument that drones are a highly effective weapon against militants.

The Pakistan government says that, while the CIA-run pilotless drone campaign has some advantages, it fuels anti-American sentiment in the country and is counterproductive because of collateral damage.

Drones are a sticking point in current talks between the United States and Pakistan aimed at repairing ties damaged by a series of events, including the recent imprisonment of the Pakistani doctor who helped the CIA hunt down bin Laden.

According to reports from North Waziristan, which American government sources did not contest, US-operated drones launched three attacks along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan between Saturday and Monday.

Reports from Pakistan said nearly 30 people were killed during the sequence of strikes, including four suspected militants on Saturday, another 10 on Sunday, and 15 people in the strike in which Libi was targeted.

Libi, reportedly born in 1963, made repeated appearances on al-Qaida videos and wrote prolifically, becoming one of the group's most prominent media warriors.

A biographer, Jarret Brachman, says Libi was seen as having made al-Qaida "cool" for a younger generation.

More than 150 on plane that crashed in Nigeria

LAGOS : A passenger plane carrying more than 150 people crashed in Nigeria's largest city on Sunday, government officials said. Firefighters pulled at least one body from a building that was damaged by the crash and searched for survivors as several charred corpses could be seen in the rubble.Casualty figures were not yet known, said Lagos state emergency manager Femi Oke-Osanyinpolu.The Lagos state government said in a statement that 153 people were on the Dana Air flight Sunday.

Yushau Shuaib, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, said they were still trying to get an official manifest on the flight. Sometimes flights in Nigeria issue paper tickets and don't record all passengers via computer."I don't think there will be any survivors," said witness Praise Richard. "It would take a miracle."Richard said he was watching a film when he heard a loud explosion that sounded like a bomb. He rushed outside and saw massive smoke and flames rising from the crash site around 3:45 p.m.

The Dana Air flight was flying from Abuja to Lagos, according to the head of Nigeria's Civil Aviation Authority, Harold Denuren. The plane did not to appear to have nose-dived into a building, but seemed to have landed on its belly. It first crashed through a furniture shop and then into residential buildings next to the workshop in this densely packed neighborhood. The nose of the plane was embedded into the three-story apartment building, damaging only one part of the structure. Fire still smoldered everywhere as a group of men stood atop the landing gear that was smoking and took pictures with their mobile phones.

At the crash site, an Associated Press reporter saw parts of the plane's seat signs scattered around. Firefighters tried to put out the smoldering flames of a jet engine and carried at least one corpse from the building that continued to crumble. Several thousand people looked on.Two fire trucks and about 50 rescue personnel were at the site after the plane went down. Some of those gathered around the site helped firefighters bring in the water hoses from their trucks.

The Nigerian Red Cross arrived, as well as Nigeria's air crash safety investigators.A military helicopter flew overhead. The sound of the crowd was also occasionally punctuated by the noise of aircraft still landing at the airport.Lagos' international airport is a major hub for West Africa and saw 2.3 million passengers pass through it in 2009, according to the most recent statistics provided by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

In August 2010, the U.S. announced it had given Nigeria the FAA's Category 1 status, its top safety rating that allows the nation's domestic carriers to fly directly to the U.S.The Nigerian government said it also now has full radar coverage of the entire nation. However, in a nation where the state-run electricity company is in tatters, state power and diesel generators sometimes both fail at airports, making radar screens go blank.

Hazare, Ramdev to seek BJP support

NEW DELHI : At a time when the government is battling an economic and political crisis, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Nitin Gandkari will meet yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Monday. Ramdev is expected to present a letter to the BJP President, asking him to support the movement demanding the government to bring back the black money allegedly stashed abroad. He is also likely to request Gadkari to help enact a strong Lokpal legislation. Ramdev had at his fast with Anna Hazare on Sunday said that he would be apporaching all political parties asking them to lend support to his anti-corruption movement.

This comes even as his alliance with Team Anna seems to be on a shaky ground. Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal stormed out of the venue on Sunday after Ramdev objected to Kejriwal naming MPs in his speech, which the yoga guru said was against the fast protocol.Ramdev said the fight against graft was not against individuals. "Arvind Kejriwal should not have taken names. It could create controversy. Please don't see it as a personal attack. This fight is not against any individual," Ramdev said. Kejriwal in his speech had said that Parliament would never pass the Lokpal bill as long as MPs like Lalu Prasad, A Raja and Suresh Kalmadi were present.Soon after Kejriwal, who was on fast along with Anna Hazare and the yoga guru, finished his speech, Ramdev took the microphone and said "today, we thought that we will not name anybody. But Arvind took the names".

"We don't want any controversies. Arvind does not have any enmity with anyone. The names have been taken in some context. We are against personal criticism", he said. During his speech, Kejriwal had attacked Manmohan Singh and his Cabinet colleagues whom Team Anna had accused of indulging in corruption. However, clearing his stand Kejriwal later, while speaking to reporters, said that he had to leave as he was unwell and he has the greatest respect for Ramdev.

Kejriwal had said that no political party wanted a strong Lokpal Bill. "There are serious allegation against 15 ministers out of 34. That is why they are not passing Lokpal Bill. Manmohan Singh is the leader of those 34 ministers. There is allegation against Manmohan Singh in coal allocation scam. 155 mines were given to the private companies without bidding and Manmohan Singh was coal minister that time," he said."None of the investigating agency is neutral, all comes under the government. All cases should be handed over to special investigation team. We have written to the Prime Minister that all the cases should be handed over to fast track court," he added.

Each tourist was provided a subsidy of `20,000 by the state government on the tour package.Of the 64 tourists, 34 belong to Krishna district and the remaining are natives of Nellore district and Hyderabad.

"As per the tour package, the travel agency is supposed to ensure flight tickets (to and fro), visa, food and accommodation for the tourists. It is said that the victims were not even facilitated to meet the officials of the Indian Embassy at Cairo," he said.

A few relatives of the victims lodged a complaint with the Gopalpuram police station saying that the travel agent, Francis, had duped the tourists. They also met Hyderabad police commissioner Anurag Sharma.Police visited the travel agency office in Secunderabad and found it closed. Akshay Kumar Saluted Ravi Teja

Published Date : 03-Jun-2012 22:00:00 GMT

History of cinema knows that Dilip Kumar once saluted ANR after watching ‘Devadas’ saying, “I wouldn’t have portrayed the role of Devdas in Hindi had I watched the Telugu version before. ANR was unmatchable”.

Now similar thing happened but in a different tone. ‘Rowdy Rathod’ (Hindi remake of Vikramarkudu) got released and the critics thumbed down the film. Though the collections are impressive, many are not happy with the film. Akshay Kumar is so down to earth that he attributed failure, if any, for himself.

Sources say that he told his close associates that he couldn’t deliver the energy and conviction that Ravi Teja delivered in Telugu. At the same time he lauded Prabhudeva saying that he is successful in meeting the standards of Rajamouli.

So, this is something that Telugu audience should be proud about.

Is Vijayamma An Anti-Social Element?

Former minister and senior Congress leader P Shankar Rao, who does not let go any opportunity to criticize Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana, has once again got a chance to attack them.
Shankar Rao found fault with male police personnel frisking and checking the luggage of YSR Congress party honorary president Y S Vijayalakshmi and her daughter Sharmila, while they were on tour from place to place as part of election campaign.
“It is totally uncalled for. Are Vijayamma and Sharmila anti-social elements? Why should the male police check their suitcases? The Chief Minister should take stern action against the police for their over-action,” he demanded.
The former minister also criticised the chief minister for saying that Jagan would have to serve 14-year imprisonment in his alleged illegal assets case.
“Jagan is still an accused and the case is still in the court. How can he serve the 14-year imprisonment? It is not proper on the part of the Chief Minister to make such a statement when the issue is still sub judice. Such comments would harm the prospects of the Congress party,” he said.

Big Hero Aiming At Bharat Rathna?

Published Date : 03-Jun-2012 22:00:00 GMT

The country’s highest civilian award is Bharat Rathna and this is given to that individual who has brought a significant difference to the society through his/her contribution. And right now, one name is being discussed among the public for being the right contender of this honourable title.

He is none other than Aamir Khan and the key reason for that is his TV show ‘Satyamev Jayate’. They say Aamir is doing such a noble thing and no other actor has done that. Some are commenting that he should be given Bharat Ratna for his works.

Others say he should be honoured ina big way than just conferring Bharat Ratna and even government should be involved. But it has to be bigger than the regular awards and titles. The key reason for this is Aamir has been responsible for bringing so much awareness among the citizens and society. Moreover, he is doing all this through a TV show what a government is unable to do despite its full powers.

Devisri's Special Services For Allu Arjun!!!

Published Date : 02-Jun-2012 22:00:00 GMT

The new age music director Devi Sri Prasad is known for his foot tapping tunes and the beats which strike a chord with the masses and youth alike. Recently, his compositions for ‘Gabbar Singh’ rocked the charts. But then it is heard that he tends to come up with something special when it is a film with Allu Arjun.
Sources say Devisri is currently busy with the numbers for ‘Julaayi’ starring Bunny along with Ileana and directed by Trivikram Srinivas. This would be a mix of melody and racy tracks. The combo of Allu Arjun- Devisri has given many noted hit numbers from films like ‘Arya ‘ ‘Arya 2’ ‘Parugu’.
However, Devisri reportedly maintained that it is sheer coincidence that he tends to give something extraordinary for Bunny’s movies. He added that even director Trivikram has got a good taste of music so let us wait to see how these ‘special’ tunes will shake the charts once they arrive.
