IITian held for ‘harassing’ girl

HYDERABAD: An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Delhi) student, who is a native of Mahabubabad in Warangal district, was arrested by Crime Investigation Department (CID) sleuths for allegedly harassing a girl student of IIT-Kanpur by uploading obscene content and her photographs on the internet as she refused to marry him. He was picked up from his residence in Mahabubabad on Saturday. ...

CID (Cyber Crime) officials said IIT-Delhi fourth year student Surender, 22, had been harassing the IIT girl student, also from Mahabubabad, by posting her photographs on the internet besides creating a fake profile of her sister maligning her character.

Incidentally, both hail from the same community. When the girl secured a good rank in IIT-JEE entrance, the girl's father, who is a doctor, approached Surender's family for guidance on admission.

On the pretext of helping her in studies, Surender became close to the girl, who later got into IIT-Kanpur. He used to visit Kanpur regularly on one pretext or the other to meet her. As they both became good friends, Surender took photographs of the girl and started pestering her to marry him.

"During one such visit, he took her straight to a local Arya Samaj mandir to get married. However, as the girl was not interested in his proposal, she vehemently opposed the move and some locals handed him over to the Kanpur police, who registered a case against him,'' CID additional superintendent of police U Ram Mohan said.
