MAHBUBNAGAR: Shattering the morning calm, badly decomposed bodies of six newborn babies and chopped body parts of three adults were found close to a garbage dump on the side of a lake here on Friday.....
The 'discovery' on the banks of Peddacheruvu set off a flurry of rumours and theories with locals speculating that the babies were either victims of illegal abortions or that of medical experiments.
Police rushed to the spot after a local, Balaraju, informed them at around 11 am about a heap of bodies in the garbage dump. It is rumoured that more bodies could have been thrown into the lake.
None of the locals had any clue about the grisly find, while police suspect that they were dumped at the lake two weeks ago.
Preliminary inquiries by the medical and health department revealed that the bodies of babies and organs were in mummified state (kept in chemical compound 'formalin') as done at teaching hospitals and medical colleges. They could be biomedical waste, disposed of in a careless manner.
"Of the six, four were of male. The gender of the remaining two could not be ascertained properly," Chandrasekhar, district medical and health officer (DM&HO) told TOI.
But what shocked the authorities was discovery of several organs of adults. "We are not in a position to decipher the number of adult bodies," district malaria officer Sanjeeva Reddy said.
He said the bodies of babies and remains of the adults were handed over to the forensic department. Sources said doctors from Osmania General Hospital would conduct the autopsy on Saturday.
Deputy superintendent of police Hymavati said an inquiry would be conducted and culprits booked. "Usually, in medical colleges, dissections are not done on babies. But if any ill-formed parts or deformities are found, such bodies of the babies are displayed in the forensic department of medical colleges," Dr. Sriman said.
While the incident perplexed the officials, it left locals traumatized. "I am yet to recover from the shock. The authorities must punish the culprits," Burra Ashok, a local, said.
Expressing shock, district minister D K Aruna said the government has ordered an inquiry into the incident. She said if these children were victims of illegal abortions, the government should identify the erring hospitals and take stern action.
