Apple takes on Google with own maps, better Siri

Apple's map service comes with three-dimensional images of cities called "Flyover" along with real-time traffic updates and turn-by-turn navigation.

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple took the wraps off its own mobile mapping service and made its enhanced Siri voice-search available for iPads as it rolled out souped-up software and hardware on Monday to help it wage war on Google.

CEO Tim Cook, who took over from late co-founder Steve Jobs last August, spearheaded the unveiling of new services -- such as in-house mapping and beefed-up Siri software -- to help keep at bay Google and its fast-growing Android mobile platform.

Its new mobile operating software -- the iOS6 -- comes with a mapping system "built from the ground up," said software chief Scott Forstall, sidelining the Google map service that the Internet giant has invested heavily in.

Apple's map service comes with three-dimensional images of cities called "Flyover" along with real-time traffic updates and turn-by-turn navigation.

And Siri, the innovative voice-activated iPhone search-feature users have criticized as faulty and inadequate, is now available on iPads and recites a larger database of answers, especially sports, restaurants and movies. It is also integrated into the new mapping service.

Finally, executives said Apple has integrated No. 1 social network Facebook deeper into the operating system, allowing Siri-users to post photos with voice commands.

The edge

Long lines marked the beginning of the week-long annual Worldwide Developers' Conference, where Apple developers rub shoulders with employees, test the latest products and software, and connect with peers. Apple kicked off proceedings by touting its hardware, its biggest edge over Google.

At 0.7 inches, the new MacBook Pro -- Apple's highest-end laptop -- ranks among the thinnest laptops in the market and will hit store shelves months before many Microsoft Windows-equipped "Ultrabooks." They will employ the "retina" displays that have won strong positive reviews for the new iPad, but start at an eye-popping $2,199 price tag.

Marketing chief Phil Schiller outlined how the redesigned MacBook Air notebooks, also unveiled at the conference, will be about $100 cheaper on average than predecessors, but sport quickerIntel Corp processors, potentially eating into territory staked out by Hewlett-Packard, Dell Inc and other PC makers.

Analysts have speculated that the company will begin aggressively competing on price, gradually shrinking the premium its Macs carry in general.

More than ever, Apple finds itself in a pitched battle with Google: in smartphones, cloud computing, and a never-ending competition to attract the best software developers. That is crucial as Apple looks to draw users deeper into its applications ecosystem.

Cook told the audience that customers have downloaded more than 30 billion Apple apps so far, choosing from more than 650,000 apps -- the largest library in the industry.

Battling in many arenas, the rivals employ different weapons. Apple's vise-like grip on its ecosystem - with the closely managed app store and its seamless integration with the hardware - stands in sharp contrast to Google's free-for-all approach.

The open system approach, reminiscent of Microsoft Corp's hugely successful strategy of creating standard-setting software that runs on a variety of hardware, has allowed Android to capture the market lead in smartphones, albeit with nothing close to Apple's profit margins.

Android has also helped create several potent hardware rivals to Apple. Samsung Electronics' Android-driven Galaxy SIII is drawing favorable comparisons to iPhone and Amazon.com Inc's cheaper Kindle Fire is challenging Apple in tablets and digital content.

The move - years in the making - to replace Google Maps is a dramatic example of how the rivalry between the companies has been evolving.

Google has invested huge sums in mapping technology over the years, and about half its map traffic now comes from iPhones and iPads. Among other things, the traffic from those devices reveals valuable location data that helps improve the mapping service and provides features like real-time traffic reports.

'Steve Jobs used abusive language'

Grignon revealed the anecdote, in a post on Geeklist, a social sharing tool for tech enthusiasts, which included a photo of his business card that displayed "F**kchop" as his title.

WASHINGTON: Steve Jobs may have had a penchant for name-calling after Andy Grignon, a former senior manager at Apple revealed that the firm's former co-founder had once called him a 'f***chop.

Grignon revealed the anecdote, in a post on Geeklist, a social sharing tool for tech enthusiasts, which included a photo of his business card that displayed "F**kchop" as his title.

In a public Facebook post, he explained that his business card was automatically approved after two weeks since a manager did not explicitly reject it.

"In the early iChatAV days, one of the many things Steve Jobs called me was a 'fuckchop'. When I got to iPod, I thought it would make a nice title. #gklst," Huffington Post quoted Grignon, as saying in his Geeklist post.

According to Walter Isaacson's depiction of the Apple co-founder in the authorized biography of Jobs, he claimed that the legendary inventor may be known as one of the greatest innovators of our time, but he was not the nicest boss.

"He's not warm and fuzzy ... He was not the world's greatest manager. In fact, he could have been one of the world's worst managers," Isaacson said during an interview.

Obama nominates Indian-American Sri Srinivasan to second highest court in US

US President Barack Obama on Monday nominated India-born legal luminary Srikanth Srinivasan to the Federal Court of Appeals, the highest ever judicial appointment of an Indian-American in the U.S and a powerful reminder of the extraordinary strides the community has made while deeply integrating into American society.

The nomination, which will have to be confirmed by the US Senate, puts an Indian-American in one of the most powerful positions in the American judicial system since the US Court of Appeals sets legal precedent in regions that cover millions of people. There are 13 Court of Appeals across the U.S. with 179 judges, and the Washington DC Appeals Court to which Srinivasan has been nominated is considered particularly influential, with Obama himself calling it ''the nation's second highest court.'' Because the US Supreme Court hears less than 100 of the more than 10,000 cases filed with it annually, Courts of Appeals serve as the final arbiter on most federal cases. If confirmed by the Senate, the judgeship is a lifetime tenure.

Srinivasan's nomination, along with that of New York Counsel Caitlin Halligan, both announced by the White House on Monday, is not without controversy. Some Obama supporters are said to have opposed his name because of his work in the U.S. Solicitor General's office during the Bushadministration, and the Senate blocked Halligan's nomination last year. But President Obama, who himself has a legal background, pushed ahead with the nomination, firmly backing the two appointments.

"Caitlin Halligan and Sri Srinivasan are dedicated public servants who will bring their tremendous experience, intellect, and integrity to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit," Obama said in a statement. "This important court is often called the Nation's second-highest court, and it stands more than a quarter vacant. Mr. Srinivasan will be a trailblazer and, like Ms. Halligan, will serve the court with distinction and excellence."

The appointment electrified the Indian-American community which has high visibility in the US. "We are tugging on the arc of history and bending it towards justice...gaining political popularity, strength and sophistication," exulted Toby Chaudhuri, a Democratic strategist who has worked with the Clinton, Gore, and Obama campaigns. "This president has appointed a record-number who have shattered barriers across the country."

Other judges of Indian-origin serving currently include Judge Amul Thapar at the US district court of the Eastern District of Kentucky (Appointed Dec. 2007) and Jay Gandhi at central district of California (Appointed April 2010).

"Sri" Srinivasan, as he is popularly known, was born in Chandigarh and grew up in Lawrence,Kansas, before receiving a BA, and later a JD and MBA from Stanford University. He clerked with Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and litigated with distinction before the US Supreme Court and the US courts of Appeals, both on behalf of the United States and in private practice, before President Obama appointed him U.S Principal Deputy Solicitor General (to replace another Indian-American Neal Katyal), a position he has held since August 2011.

Srinivasan has also taught at Harvard Law School. His sister, Srinija Srinivasan, is one of Yahoooriginals, employee number 5 of the company before she left the storied Silicon Valley start-up in 2010 after 15 years there. Obama also appointed her as a member of the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars in 2010.

NEW DELHI: The Indian economy will grow by 6.9% in this financial year (2012-13) notwithstanding problems like policy uncertainties, fiscal deficit and inflation, the World Bankprojected today, while cautioning that developing nations will have to face tougher times.

"India will see growth (measured at factor cost) increasing to 6.9, 7.2 and 7.4% in fiscal years 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15, respectively," the World Bank said in the report titled 'Global Economic Prospects' .

Referring to developments in 2011, the multi-lateral lending agency said that growth in India was particularly weak due to monetary policy, stalled reforms and electricity shortages. These factors, along with fiscal and inflation concerns, cut into investment activity, it added. 

Increase duty on diesel cars up to Rs 2.5 lakh: Jaipal Reddy

NEW DELHI: If the government accepts oil minister S Jaipal Reddy's proposal, the price of small diesel cars could soon rise by Rs 1.7 lakh while medium-to-large guzzlers could become costlier by Rs 2.55 lakh a piece.

The proposal to impose additional excise duty on diesel cars is bound to trigger protests from automakers, who have seen sales growing at the slowest pace in seven months in May. Domestic car sales declined 24% in May compared to the year-ago period due to high fuel prices and interest rates.

The proposal drew a thumbs down from analysts and private players, who described it as an excuse to avoid fuel pricing reforms. "From the RBI to C Rangarajan, head of the PM's Economic Advisory Council, everyone has recommended deregulation of fuel prices. If you can't do that for political reasons, at least fix subsidy on diesel and then let the market determine the pump price. Taxing vehicles would serve hardly any purpose," said an industry analyst requesting anonymity.

But Reddy has his arguments for seeking taxing diesel vehicles that are outpacing petrol car sales. In a June 7 letter to finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, the oil minister gave three key reasons for his proposal aimed at arresting a ballooning fuel subsidy bill.

Reddy pointed out that the proposed additional excise duties are equivalent to the minimum benefit that a diesel car owner derives from the fuel's price differential with petrol — at current prices — over a 10-year assumed life of a vehicle. Petrol in Delhi costs Rs 71.16 a litre against Rs 40.91 for diesel.

Reddy's arithmetic goes like this: he first calculates the total distance a vehicle is expected to clock in its 10-year life span, assuming an annual run of 18,000km. Then, he works out the fuel costs by taking a median mileage of 18km to a litre for small cars and 12km for medium/large vehicles. For good measure, he shaves off 10% of the total cost to level.

According to Reddy's calculation, the additional excise duty amounts to asking the diesel car buyer to pay upfront the price differential with petrol that he or she would enjoy later. A petrol car owner, in contrast, shells out every time at the pump.

Reddy also pointed out the adverse impact of increased diesel car sales on the government's earnings. Petrol attracts an excise duty of Rs 14.78 per litre against Rs 2.06 a litre for diesel. So each time a buyer opts for a diesel car instead of petrol and visits a petrol pump, the government loses Rs 12.72 in excise duty on litre of diesel. Together with the Rs 12.53 a litre subsidy on diesel, the actual price differential with petrol at Delhi works out to Rs 25.75 a litre.

To drive home the enormity of the situation arising out of this increasing dieselization, Reddy says diesel consumption rose by 7.6% in 2011-12 against 6.2% in 2010-11. In contrast, growth in petrol consumption fell from 10.7% in 2010-11 to 5.6% in 2011-12.

The Kirit Parikh Committee on fuel pricing reforms had recommended an additional excise duty of Rs 80,000 in February 2010 when duty difference on petrol and diesel was Rs 9.75 a litre and under-recovery on petrol was more at Rs 3.97 a litre than Rs 2 on diesel.

No Sentiments For These Celebrities?

There was an unfortunate incident at the pre-marriage celebrations young hero Ram Charan Teja, son of megastar and Congress MP K Chiranjeevi on Monday night.

Even as the family was enjoying the evening to celebrate “Sangeeth” programme at Annapurna Studios, Chiranjeevi’s grand daughter (daughter of his elder daughter Sushmita) fell down from a building and sustain head injuries. She was immediately shifted to Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills, where she is undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.

What surprised everybody was that Chiranjeevi’s family members and their continued with dancing, boozing and dining programme as usual, unmindful of the tragic accident of his grand daughter. May be the family members did not want to disturb the party and might have deliberately played down the accident. And it could even be not so serious accident.

But there were comments that if such incidents happen in anybody’s place, the celebrations would have been either put off or cancelled till it is ensured that the accident victim is safe and has recovered. Since it is the wedding celebration of a highly-popular celebrity and is also a question of prestige for the family, they might have taken it easy. Yet, there were comments that celebrities have no sentiments!

వీళ్లద్దరూ మొండిచేయి చూపించేసరికి ఇప్పుడు గుణశేఖర్ పాలపిల్లపై తన దృష్టిని కేంద్రీకరించాడట. సబ్జెక్టు వినిపించాడట. ఐతే ఇప్పుడిప్పుడే గ్లామర్ హీరోయిన్ గా రేసులో ముందుకు దూసుకుపోతున్న తమన్నా ఒప్పుకుంటుందో లేదోమరి.

బడా బాబులు, కోటీశ్వరుల ఇళ్లల్లో పెళ్లంటే ఏ రేంజిలో హడావుడి ఉంటుందో కొత్తగా చెప్పక్కర్లేదు. దేశ విదేశాల నుంచి పెళ్లి సంబంధించిన అలంకరణ వస్తువులు, అరుదైన పూలు ఇంపోర్ట్ చేసుకుని తమ హోదాను చాటుకునే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తుంటారు. ధనవంతుల కుటుంబాలకు చెందిన మెగా పవర్ స్టార్ రామ్ చరణ్, ఉపాసన పెళ్లి కూడా అదే తరహాలో జరుగుతుందని అంతా ఊహించారు.

కానీ అందుకు భిన్నంగా....స్వదేశంలో దొరికే అందమైన అలంకరణ సామాగ్రి, ఇతర హ్యాండీక్రాప్ట్స్ ప్రిపేర్ చేస్తున్నారు ఇరుకుటుంబాల వారు. అలా చేయడం ద్వారా దేశంలోని కళాకారులకు మేలు చేసిన వారం అవుతాం అనేది వారి ఉద్దేశ్యం అంటున్నారు సన్నిహితులు. పెళ్లిలో వాడే ప్రతి వస్తువు విషయంలో దేశీయంగా తయారైన వాటికే ప్రాధాన్యత ఇస్తున్నారట. ఇలా చేయడం నిజంగా ఆదర్శ ప్రాయమే.

ఇటు చరణ్ కుటుంబంతో పాటు, అటు ఉపాసన కుటుంబం కూడా బాగా ధన వంతులు. పైగా రాజకీయంగా, సీనీ రంగంలో భాగా పలుకు బడి ఉన్న వారు. ఈ నేపథ్యంలో తమ ముద్దుల వారసులు రామ్ చరణ్, ఉపాసన వివాహం దేశ చరిత్రలోనే వన్ ఆఫ్ ది బిగ్గెస్ట్ ఈ వెంట్‌గా నిర్వహించేందుకు ఇరు కుటుంబాల వాళ్లు ఏర్పాట్లు చేస్తున్నారు. ఈ వేడుక కోసం కోట్ల రూపాయలను నీళ్లలా ఖర్చు పెట్టేస్తూ కనీ వినీ ఎరుగని రీతిలో ఏర్పాట్లు చేస్తున్నారు.

న్యూఢిల్లీ, జూన్ 12: రాష్టప్రతి పదవికి యూపీఏ తరపున పోటీ చేసే అభ్యర్థి పేరు ఒకటి రెండు రోజుల్లో ప్రకటించే అవకాశాలు కనిపిస్తున్నాయి. కాంగ్రెస్ అధినేత్రి సోనియాగాంధీ బుధవారం తృణమూల్ కాంగ్రెస్ అధ్యక్షురాలు, పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్ ముఖ్యమంత్రి మమతా బెనర్జీతో భేటీ అవుతారు. రాష్టప్రతి పదవికి యూపీఏ అభ్యర్థిత్వంపై చర్చలు జరపనున్నారు. కొత్త రాష్టప్రతి వ్యవహారంపై మమతా బెనర్జీతో ఒక అవగాహన కుదరగానే సోనియాగాంధీ యూపీఏ అభ్యర్థి పేరు ప్రకటించొచ్చని చెబుతున్నారు. సోనియా ఆహ్వానం మేరకు మంగళవారం రాత్రి మమతా బెనర్జీ ఢిల్లీ చేరుకున్నారు. మమతతో చర్చలు పూరె్తైన తరువాతనే రాష్టప్రతి పదవికి పోటీ చేసే యూపీఏ అభ్యర్థి వ్యవహారం కొలిక్కి వస్తుందనేది అందరికి తెలిసిందే. యూపీఏ తరపున లోకసభ నాయకుడు, ఆర్థిక మంత్రి ప్రణబ్ ముఖర్జీ ఎన్నికల బరిలోకి దిగుతారని వార్తలు రావటం తెలిసిందే. ప్రణబ్ ముఖర్జీ అకస్మాత్తుగా అఫ్గానిస్తాన్ పర్యటన రద్దు చేసుకున్నారు. రాష్టప్రతి పదవికి యూపీఏ తరపున పోటీ చేయవలసి వస్తున్నందుకే, ఆయన అఫ్గాన్ పర్యటనను రద్దు చేసుకున్నారనే మాట వినిపిస్తోంది. సోనియా ఇప్పటికే డిఎంకె అధ్యక్షుడు ఎం కరుణానిధి, ఎన్సీపీ అధ్యక్షుడు, కేంద్ర వ్యవసాయ మంత్రి శరద్ పవార్, ఆర్‌ఎల్‌డి అధ్యక్షుడు, కేంద్ర విమానయాన మంత్రి అజిత్‌సింగ్‌లతో యూపీఏ అభ్యర్థిత్వంపై చర్చలు జరపటం తెలిసిందే. సోనియా సలహామేరకు ప్రధాని మన్మోహన్ సింగ్ సమాజ్‌వాదీ పార్టీ అధ్యక్షుడు ములాయం సింగ్ యాదవ్‌తో కొత్త రాష్టప్రతి ఎంపిక గురించి సమాలోచనలు జరపటం తెలిసిందే. తృణమూల్ కాంగ్రెస్ వినా మిగతా అన్ని యూపీఏ భాగస్వామ్య పార్టీలు రాష్టప్రతి పదవికి ప్రణబ్ ముఖర్జీ అభ్యర్థిత్వాన్ని సమర్థించటం తెలిసిందే. ప్రణబ్ ముఖర్జీని రాష్టప్రతిగా ఎంపిక చేయటంపై మమతా బెనర్జీ ఇంతవరకు అధికారికంగా ఒక్కమాట కూడా మాట్లాడకపోవటం గమనార్హం. పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్ రాష్ట్రం ఆర్థిక సంక్షోభం నుంచి బైట పడేందుకు కేంద్రం పెద్దఎత్తున ఆదుకోవాలని మమతా బెనర్జీ డిమాండ్ చేయటం తెలిసిందే. రాష్టప్రతి ఎన్నికను కేంద్రం బెంగాల్‌కు అందించే ఆర్థిక సాయంతో మమత ముడిపెట్టడంతో పరిస్థితి కొంత జఠిలంగా తయారైంది. పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్ ప్రభుత్వం కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వానికి దాదాపు 22వేల వేల కోట్ల రూపాయల వడ్డీ బకాయిలు చెల్లించవలసి ఉంది. ఆ మొత్తాన్ని మాఫీ చేయాలని మమతా డిమాండ్ చేస్తున్నారు. ప్రస్తుతం పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్‌కు ఈ విధామైన ఆర్థిక సాయం అందిస్తే, రాష్ట్రాలు కూడా ఇలాంటి డిమాండ్లు చేసేందుకు అవకాశం ఉన్నందున కేంద్రం ఈ విషయంలో జాగరూకతతో అడుగులేస్తోంది. మమతా బెనర్జీ మాత్రం తమ రాష్ట్రాన్ని ఆర్థికంగా ఆదుకుంటేనే రాష్టప్రతి ఎన్నికలో యూపీఏ అధినాయకత్వం ఎంపిక చేసే అభ్యర్థిని సమర్థిస్తామన్న మొండి పట్టుదలతో ఉన్నారు. పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్ ఆర్థిక మంత్రి అమిత్ మిత్రా సోమవారం ఢిల్లీకి వచ్చి ఆర్థిక మంత్రి ప్రణబ్ ముఖర్జీతో సుదీర్ఘ చర్చలు జరిపారు. పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్‌ను ఆర్థిక సంక్షోభం నుండి కాపాడేందుకు పెద్దఎత్తున ఆర్థికసాయం చేయాలని విజప్తి చేశారు. మీరు రాష్టప్రతి కావాలని కోరుకుంటున్నాము. దీంతోపాటు రాష్ట్రం కూడా ఆర్థిక సంక్షోభం నుంచి బైట పడాలని ఆశిస్తున్నామని ఆమిత్ మిత్రా ఆయనతో అన్నట్టు తెలిసింది. అయితే కాంగ్రెస్ హైకమాండ్ మాత్రం రాష్టప్రతి ఎన్నికను పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్ ప్రభుత్వం ఆర్థిక సహాయం డిమాండ్‌తో ముడిపెట్టేందుకు ఇష్టపడటం లేదు. ఇది మంచి పద్ధతి కాదని సోనియా భావిస్తున్నారు. రాష్టప్రతి ఎన్నికతో ముడి పెట్టకుండా ఆర్థిక సాయం వ్యవహారాన్ని విడిగా పరిష్కరించు కోవాలని సోనియా గాంధీ వాదిస్తున్నట్టు తెలిసింది. ఆమె బుధవారం మమతా బెనర్జీతో మాట్లాడినప్పుడు ఈ విషయాన్ని స్పష్టంగా చెప్పే ఆవకాశాలు ఉన్నాయ. పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్‌ను ఆదుకునేందుకు తాము సిద్ధంగానే ఉన్నా, దీన్ని రాష్టప్రతి ఎన్నికతో ముడిపెట్టకూడదని సోనియా ఆమెకు విజప్తి చేయనున్నారు. మమతా బెనర్జీ ఈ ప్రతిపాదనను ఆమోదిస్తే రాష్టప్రతి పదవికి యూపీఏ అభ్యర్థి ఎంపిక పూర్తయ్యేందుకు అవకాశం కలగటంతో పాటు, పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్‌కు ఆర్థిక సాయం చేయటం కూడా ఒక కొలిక్కి వస్తాయని కాంగ్రెస్ నేతలు అంటున్నారు.

పోలింగ్ 78.49 శాతం

హైదరాబాద్, జూన్ 12: ఉప ఎన్నికల్లో భారీ పోలింగ్ నమోదైంది. అక్కడక్కడ చిన్నపాటి ఘర్షణలు వినా మిగిలిన పోలింగ్ ప్రశాంతంగా జరిగినట్టు ఎన్నికల కమిషన్ ప్రకటించింది. 18 అసెబ్లీ స్థానాల్లో సరాసరిన 78.49 శాతం పోలింగ్ నమోదు కాగా, నెల్లూరు లోక్‌సభ స్థానంలో 70శాతం మేరకు పోలింగ్ జరిగింది. అత్యధికంగా నర్సాపురంలో 88.77శాతం, అతి తక్కువగా తిరుపతిలో 54.07శాతం పోలింగ్ శాతం నమోదైంది. స్థానిక సమస్యలపై నాలుగు గ్రామాల్లో వోటర్లు ఎన్నికలను బహిష్కరించగా, మిగిలిన ప్రాంతాల్లో ఉదయం నుంచే ఓటర్లు పెద్ద ఎత్తున క్యూకట్టారు. ఓటరు జాబితాలో పేర్లు గల్లంతయ్యాయంటూ దాదాపు అన్ని నియోజకవర్గాల్లో ఓటర్లు ఆందోళనకు దిగారు. తమవద్ద ఓటరు గుర్తింపు కార్డు ఉన్నప్పటికీ ఓటర్ల జాబితాలో తమ పేర్లు లేవని, కొన్నిచోట్ల కుటుంబ సభ్యుల్లో ఒకరి పేరుంటే ఇతర కుటుంబీకుల పేర్లు లేవంటూ ఫిర్యాదులు వచ్చాయి. మండుటెండను సైతం లెక్క చేయకుండా ఉదయం ఎనిమిది గంటలనుంచే ఓటర్లు పోలింగ్ కేంద్రాలకు చేరుకోవడంతో, ఎక్కడ చూసినా ఎన్నికల హడావుడి కనిపించింది. అయితే అనేక ప్రాంతాల్లో ఇవిఎంలు సక్రమంగా పనిచేయకపోవడంతో వాటిని మార్పు చేసి ఎన్నికలు కొనసాగించాల్సి వచ్చింది. ఇక ఎక్కడేం జరిగినా వెంటనే తెలుసుకునేందుకు ఏర్పాటు చేసిన లైవ్ వెబ్ కెమేరాలు కొన్నిచోట్ల పని చేయకపోవడం, ఇంకొన్ని ప్రాంతాల్లో వివిధ రాజకీయ పార్టీలకు చెందిన వారే కెమేరాలను ఆపుచేయడం జరిగినట్టు ఎన్నికల కమిషన్‌కు ఫిర్యాదులు అందాయి. వీటిపై దర్యాప్తు చేస్తున్నట్టు ఎన్నికల ప్రధాన అధికారి భన్వర్‌లాల్ వెల్లడించారు.
మంగళవారం పోలింగ్ ముగిసే సమయానికి అనేక స్థానాల్లో 75నుంచి 80శాతం వరకూ పోలింగ్ నమోదైంది. ఇది ఊహించని విధంగా ఉండటంతో అభ్యర్థులు కూడా ఆందోళన వ్యక్తం చేస్తున్నారు. పెరిగిన ఓటింగ్ సరళి ఎవరికి లాభిస్తుందో, ఎవరికి చేటు తెస్తుందో అర్ధంకాక పార్టీ నేతలు, అభ్యర్థులు తలలు పట్టుకుంటున్నారు. స్థానికంగా ఉన్న తమ గ్రామ సమస్యలు పరిష్కరించడం లేదని ఆరోపిస్తూ నెల్లూరు లోక్‌సభ స్థానం పరిధిలోని రాజపాలెం, చౌదరిపాలెంలో ప్రజలు ఎన్నికలను బహిష్కరించగా, పోలవరం నియోజకవర్గంలోని చింతపల్లి, తుంబలూరు గ్రామాల్లోనూ ఎన్నికలను బహిష్కరించారు. అయితే బరిలో ఉన్న అభ్యర్థుల్లో తాము మద్దతు పలికే పార్టీకి చెందిన అభ్యర్థులు లేకపోవడం వల్ల తాము ఎన్నికలను బహిష్కరిస్తున్నట్టు అక్కడి ప్రజలు వెల్లడించారు.
గతంలో ఎన్నడూ లేనివిధంగా ఉప ఎన్నికలను అంతా ప్రతిష్టాత్మకంగా తీసుకోవడంతో ప్రధాన పార్టీల కార్యకర్తల మధ్య చిన్నపాటి ఘర్షణలు కూడా చోటుచేసుకున్నాయి. కడప జిల్లా రైల్వే కోడూరులో వైఎస్సార్ కాంగ్రెస్, కాంగ్రెస్ వర్గాల మధ్య ఘర్షణ చెలరేగి రాళ్లు రువ్వుకోవడం, కర్రలతో కొట్టుకోవడంతో పోలీసులు రంగంలోకి దిగి లాఠీచార్జి చేయాల్సివచ్చింది. ఘర్షణలో పలువురు కార్యకర్తలకు గాయాలయ్యాయి. ఒంగోలులోనూ చిన్నపాటి ఘర్షణలు చోటుచేసుకున్నాయి. ఇదే సమయంలో ఒంగోలు నియోజకవర్గంలోని 60వ నెంబర్ పోలింగ్ కేంద్రంలో ఓటువేసే రహస్య ప్రాంతంలోకి వెళ్లి ఒక పార్టీకి అనుకూలంగా వ్యవహరించిన ఒక మైక్రో అబ్జర్వర్, ప్రిసైడింగ్ అధికారిపై ఎన్నికల కమిషన్ చర్యలు తీసుకుంది. వారిని వెంటనే ఎన్నికల విధులనుంచి తప్పించి వేరే అధికారులకు బాధ్యతలు అప్పగించారు. వారిద్దరిపై చర్యలు తీసుకోనున్నట్టు ఎన్నికల కమిషన్ ప్రకటించింది. ఈ కేసులో ఇరుకున్న ఇద్దరు అధికారుల పేర్లూ శేషగిరిరావే కావడం విశేషం.
ఇలావుండగా, పోలింగ్ స్టేషన్ల వద్దే క్యూలో ఉన్న ఓటర్లను తమకు ఓటు వేయాలంటూ ప్రచారం చేసిన తిరుపతి వైఎస్సార్ కాంగ్రెస్ అభ్యర్ధి కరుణాకరరెడ్డి, నెల్లూరు లోక్‌సభ కాంగ్రెస్ అభ్యర్ధి సుబ్బిరామిరెడ్డిలపై కేసు నమోదు చేస్తున్నట్టు భన్వర్‌లాల్ వెల్లడించారు.

ఉపపోరులో వైకాపా-16, కాంగ్రెస్-1, తెరాస-1, తెదేపా-0: లగడపాటి జోస్యం!!

విజయవాడ కాంగ్రెస్ ఎంపీ లగడపాటి రాజగోపాల్ ఎప్పటిలా ఎన్నికల ఫలితాలపై తన సర్వే అంచనాలను మంగళవారం సాయంత్రం వెల్లడించారు. ప్రస్తుతం రాష్ట్రంలో జరిగిన ఉప ఎన్నికల ఫలితాల్లో జగన్ నాయకత్వంలోని వైఎస్ఆర్ కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ ప్రభంజనం సృష్టించనుందని ఆయన చెప్పారు. దీనికి కారణం జగన్ అరెస్టు, వైఎస్.విజయమ్మ కన్నీటి అస్త్రం బాగా ప్రచారం ప్రభావితం చేశాయన్నారు. 

మంగళవారం సాయంత్రం ఢిల్లీలో మీడియాతో మాట్లాడుతూ... ఈ ఉప ఎన్నికల్లో జగన్ ప్రభావాన్ని కొంతమేరకు తాము నివారించామన్నారు. ముఖ్యంగా. ఉప ఎన్నికల్లో కాంగ్రెస్ శ్రేణులు ఐక్యమత్యంతో పని చేశాయన్నారు. అందువల్లే ఈ ఉప ఎన్నికల్లో ఓటింగ్ శాతం పెరిగిందన్నారు. 

అయితే, ఈ ఎన్నికల్లో జగన్ చేసిన తప్పులను, దోపిడీని ముందు నుంచి ఎండగట్టి వుంటే మరోలా ఉండేదన్నారు. ఈ ఉప ఎన్నికల్లో జగన్ చివరి అస్త్రంగా తల్లి విజయమ్మ కన్నీటి అస్త్రాన్ని ప్రయోగించి సక్సెస్ సాధించారన్నారు. 

ఇకపోతే.. మొత్తం 18 అసెంబ్లీ ఎన్నికల్లో వైఎస్ఆర్ కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ 12 నుంచి 16 సీట్లలో గెలుపొందవచ్చన్నారు. అలాగే, కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ ఒకటి నుంచి మూడు స్థానాలు, టీడీపీ రెండు స్థానాల్లో గెలుపొందవచ్చు లేగా ఒక్క స్థానంలో కూడా గెలుపొందక పోవచ్చని ఆయన జోస్యం చెప్పారు. పరకాల స్థానంలో టీఆర్ఎస్ గెలుపొందుతుందన్నారు. 

నెల్లూరు ఎంపీ లోక్‌సభ స్థానం ఉప ఫలితంపై మాత్రం ఈనెల 14వ తేదీ సాయంత్రం తన సర్వే ఫలితాన్ని వెల్లడిస్తానని చెప్పారు. ఎందుకంటే.. ఈ స్థానం పరిధిలో ఉన్న ఏడు అసెంబ్లీ సెగ్మంట్ల వివరాలు అందాల్సి ఉందని, ఇవి వచ్చిన ఫలితాన్ని వెల్లడిస్తామన్నారు.
